T-shirt
This was definitely a fun project to come up with and a lot of work to setup. I thought about painting a picture on a ton of my old shirts kinda like the jean picture but then decided to make it better for other people (not just me). I went to Target and bought 32 T-shirts and started planning this thing out. The idea sounded pretty straight forward to me, but it got to be a lot of work. I had to put something inbetween the layers of the shirt so the ink didn’t push through to the back, so I had to cut a ton of ply wood. Then I had took all the wood and shirts, sat down, and put the wood into the shirts (took a few hours) ugh. At this point I had a stack of shirts leaning up against the wall and I was trying to figure out how to attach them to the wall. This was difficult because I knew I couldn’t damage them in some way. I went through a few ideas and settled on putting a 1×2inch board across and hammering nails into the board as supports for the shirts to rest on. Then I put up a bunch of draping to make it look clean and sharp against the wall.
I started this piece with the clear idea of the picture I wanted to make and how. I wanted to make the piece with stars and so I had to make a stamp. I went to the grocery store and bought a sponge (I had to wring it out in the sink a ton because it comes damp). I cut out a star and had to make a little contraption to hold the sponge and give it even pressure when used.
Earlier in the week I had gone to the art store and found some screen printing ink which is of course perfect for this application as well. So I was ready to get started.
I had the cams all set up and started stamping. Some of the shirts weren’t attached really well so they got pushed around a little bit. There wasn’t a lot of questions going into the piece because I spent a good amount of time planing. And quite frankly there isn’t a lot to say about the creation part because it just involved a lot of stamping.
You may be wondering why I picked this image and who would want a T-shirt of this right? Well if you think about the shirts individually they are quite different than the entire image. You could be walking around with this shirt on and it looks like a happy shirt with lots of bright stars on it. That is the reason I picked this subject and the medium. I wanted something that came across substantially different between the small segments and the entire piece.
hope you enjoyed this weeks installment
take care
phil

I have been a fan of yours from the beginning, along with millions of others. I was just wondering if we could specify which part of the painting we’d like. I would like the piece that actually has part of your initials on it. Although I am most interested in purchasing the limited edition “Moment” piece. I will be out of the country for a bit but hopefully when I return you will still have one of the limited edition pieces for sale.
You have shared your art with the world but by far the greatest gift you have given is showing others the process and in doing so you have the world embracing art once again!
February 11th, 2008 at 6:55 pm
Could you send the t-shirt to Brazil?
February 11th, 2008 at 7:21 pm
yes I ship internationally
February 11th, 2008 at 9:55 pm
You’re work is amazing… but I’m really curious as to how you know where to put more ink/stick figures/letters/etc. in order to give shadow and dimension to your pieces… Do you just look at it as a whole 5 steps ahead of yourself or do you have some sort of crazy math and outline figured out ahead of time?
February 11th, 2008 at 10:30 pm
To be honest, Phil, I first thought this was a picture of Martin Luther King Jr.
I still cant seem to make out the image of Saddam
February 12th, 2008 at 1:01 am
At first glance I thought of Martin Luther King as well but then Saddam came through. To think one could be mistaken for the other…
February 13th, 2008 at 10:33 am
I really do like the artwork, though I agree that it took me a few seconds to see him. I also like how you can say a lot about the picture. For one, we have the stars…something our flag has and often is shown as how great our country is, and what it has done. But then, once you see the t-shirts as a whole, you realize that its the same country that killed a man. To be clear, I don’t feel that way. He was not a good man, and so his death was a good act. I am just suggesting that your work can be viewed that way. Other then that, great work.
February 14th, 2008 at 1:44 pm
The composition is indeed the brilliant part of the piece. Two very simply elements - an image and stars. But one very powerful and evocative statement. One (mad)man composed of blood-red stars. He spilled a lot of his countryman’s blood; his own blood was spilled by his countrymen; and we of the good ole USofA have spilled - and continue to spill - the blood of both our countries men, women and children. If only _we_ could de-construct the pieces to make the entire scene as neutral and benign as a single one of the tee-shirts. Together with the GWB piece, these are the most moving. They allow one to contemplate such a simple, yet complex, issue for oneself without having to justify ones own pov to others. Again, brilliant, Phil.
February 14th, 2008 at 8:43 pm
I like this piece, and I too thought it was MLK. Kind of scary how we can see them both.
Not in a creepy way, I’m just in love with your work. I just received my piece of the jeans today and I’m extremely excited. I have been showing everyone I know! I’m going to the store to get a framebox for it shortly. I won’t be ordering this one, but hopefully you’ll do another giveaway piece before the end of the month that I can order because I would love to have another, even if it’s just a scrap, of your artwork. Thank you Phil!
You said in the entry that you bought the shirts instead of using your own. I have a confession to make. I have a big crush on you and would rather have you used your own clothes
February 14th, 2008 at 11:32 pm
Hey Phil!
Jsut wanted to say what wonderful works of art you have, I think you have a very clever way of giving away the last few works of art instead of destroying them, because then no one would get to enjoy them. I saw one of your latest video’s online and i have been looking around your site for the past half hour! Keep up the good work,
Mia
February 15th, 2008 at 8:49 pm
Am I blind? Where does he say this is Saadam? Great piece, though.
February 17th, 2008 at 11:04 pm
i initially thought this was a portrait of Obama. i think that the nose and lips bear a great resemblance to him, but that might just be me, as i can also see saddam as well on some level.
you’re work is extroidinary, Phil. i recieved my portion of the last goodbye art piece (jeans/toes) a few days ago and have been looking around for a frame in which both the print and fabric will look nice.
peace,
Sue.
February 17th, 2008 at 11:56 pm
Very very creative. Love the project.
February 20th, 2008 at 5:25 pm
They say good Art can be subjective. I see Obama speaking at a rally.
Big fan of your other works; Very interested in how you construct your work and how the medium/construction of each piece is part of the message
February 21st, 2008 at 1:23 am
What type of paint did you use?
Just acrylic?
February 21st, 2008 at 1:23 am
And is it free shipping?

I am completely amazed with the way your mind works in order to create your art is truly amazing, because it exceeds that of the everyday human mind. You are amazing to watch. Thank you so very much for allowing us to watch you create your work. You have mad talent.
February 22nd, 2008 at 2:45 am
OOPS I READ UR MESSAGE WRONG AUDRY SORRY!!!
February 25th, 2008 at 8:08 pm
Hey Phil,
I was just wondering how we find out if we are getting a t-shirt? I bought one and I didn’t know if I missed something. As in, if you were going to e-mail us or post who got one. Or if we just get a surprise in the mail one day. . .Cause that would be cool.
February 26th, 2008 at 5:49 am
I couldn’t understand some parts of this article T-shirt, but I guess I just need to check some more resources regarding this, because it sounds interesting.
February 26th, 2008 at 2:12 pm
okay, im totally speechless, i said so many things in the previous blog, and I’m running out of word to describe u and ur work!! ( i just did it ha ? )
February 26th, 2008 at 10:42 pm
I had no idea who it was supposed to be when I saw it. And if it is, in fact, Saddam, I don’t really see it. I can’t tell who is on the jeans, either. Perhaps you can include that on your next piece, Phil? Thanks.
February 27th, 2008 at 9:12 pm
Love the art, and the ideas you come up with
Are you all out of t-shirts?
February 28th, 2008 at 2:33 am
Hi Phil! I love the concept of all your art on the internet. I like how you incorporate video with the art and the “goodbye” aspect of it. My favorites are Daudie, the frozen wine piece, the candles, George W, the toe painting …well, actually, they all are great. I’d like a t-shirt, too, if you have any left. I also would like to order some postcards. I’ve been spreading word of your website and youtube stuff to everyone, especially your fellow artists. Thanks for sharing your talent with us out in cyberspace. Keep creating. Sue

Wow, I have been gone far too long. Wish I could have made if for a shirt, but just being able to see all the wonderful creations is soul fulfilling for me. I have been a big fan, and have found all of my family members “moments” on my signed poster. Keep up the wonderful art.
You are such an inspiration.

Phil
Thanks for the art and letting us be a part of it. We got our t-shirt today and it truly is a piece of art. We look forward to seeing what your mind gives us next.
Peace
March 2nd, 2008 at 9:25 am
Phil-
Your art is great. Both relevant and well-produced. You’ve also found a great avenue to allow access. I’m an artist myself and I’ve been watching your videos for a while now. One question: I’ve always wondered why you sign your name so big on them? I know it’s a mark of ownership and/or creation but, in my opinion, something more subtle would be better. It takes away from the well-crafted image a lot of the time.
March 2nd, 2008 at 1:58 pm
how do i get a shirt??
March 2nd, 2008 at 4:05 pm
Any shirts left by chance? You have an amazing talent!!
