Clemens – Syringes – Goodbye Art at it’s best

Wednesday, May 28th, 2008

Why is this Goodbye Art at its best? Because I forgot to take a photo of the final piece before I destroyed it. hahaha…. *tear* hahaha

So I continue with sports. Of course you know I had to take on doping. I wanted to take the most talked about situation in sports doping; Clemens.

One of the hardest parts for this project was actually coming up with an interesting video. I’m finding that to be quite a challenge, each week making not just a picture, but a video to go along with it. Sometimes I add a little skit or other times I just throw together the creation to music.

I just realized there are only 7 more Goodbye Art projects left, weird.

So anyway, here is a still photo from the video.

After stabbing all of the syringes into the foam backing, I added the black with paint. I then proceeded to whack them off the wall with a baseball bat.

This was actually a fairly easy project. I will definitely plan on doing a larger more detailed project with syringes in the future when I get an exhibition.

Hope you all enjoyed the piece. If you can, please support Goodbye Art here!

Teeth! Youch!

Here’s the latest project! Teeth on hockey pucks! haha.

Watch the video

This all started with walking around a sporting goods store and seeing hockey stuff. I decided I wanted to find teeth so I started calling all around and found that it’s really hard to find loose teeth. ha! Who would’ve guess! So I ended up at the craft store to buy some FIMO which is a cheap clay that can be baked in the oven. I then formed a bunch of teeth and cooked them. Then came the picture above where I added some color to them. Some red and yellows to dull them up a bit.

Here are my final teeth

Here they are stacked up on the hockey puck. Basically what I had to do was organize the teeth, take a photo, reorganize, take a photo, reorganize, take a photo. A very monotonous project. The end result was fine. I am not overly thrilled with it, but given it’s half day status it was quite satisfactory. Not sure if I will persue this sort of project again but it was fun for a bit!

Throwing baseballs

Wednesday, May 14th, 2008

Woo! I got a sunburn making this piece.

For those of you finding the blog before the video, the picture above is about 7 feet high by 11 feet wide. Those big splotches you see were made when I dipped baseballs into paint and threw them at the canvas. Hold on I’m getting ahead of myself.

The idea for this month of Goodbye Art came after my Lance Armstrong picture. I wanted to make a handful of pieces but for fun and not spend a lot of time on them. I know there are plenty of ways to do sports. Heck, many artists spend their whole career making amazing paintings of sports starts and such. Moving on, I wanted my first one for the month (I know I’m behind, but I’m gonna play catch up) to be really fun, to get my spirits up and energy going. I thought about throwing baseballs at a canvas and how many different ways there would be to make an image that way. I settled on this one, I made a mask/stencil and applied it to the primed canvas. Then I tossed baseballs at it for quite a while. Then I peeled away the mask/stencil to reveal the image.

As I was prepping for this piece this morning I was rather concerned that it may not work. I thought I would have to bring it back to the studio and do some touch ups, buuuuuuut, as I was pulling the mask off I realized it was turning out better than I had planned. It has this kinda rough ‘n gritty look that I couldn’t be happier with.

The one thing that surprised me was how many throws it took to cover the canvas. ugh. I definitely am glad I experimented with this idea because I will definitely be using it again in the future. You’ll see, I’m a cookin a somethin up (with Italian accent).

Woo! I was sad to see the piece go, but I was excited to see it go up in flames!
