Throwing baseballs

Woo! I got a sunburn making this piece.

For those of you finding the blog before the video, the picture above is about 7 feet high by 11 feet wide. Those big splotches you see were made when I dipped baseballs into paint and threw them at the canvas. Hold on I’m getting ahead of myself.

The idea for this month of Goodbye Art came after my Lance Armstrong picture. I wanted to make a handful of pieces but for fun and not spend a lot of time on them. I know there are plenty of ways to do sports. Heck, many artists spend their whole career making amazing paintings of sports starts and such. Moving on, I wanted my first one for the month (I know I’m behind, but I’m gonna play catch up) to be really fun, to get my spirits up and energy going. I thought about throwing baseballs at a canvas and how many different ways there would be to make an image that way. I settled on this one, I made a mask/stencil and applied it to the primed canvas. Then I tossed baseballs at it for quite a while. Then I peeled away the mask/stencil to reveal the image.

As I was prepping for this piece this morning I was rather concerned that it may not work. I thought I would have to bring it back to the studio and do some touch ups, buuuuuuut, as I was pulling the mask off I realized it was turning out better than I had planned. It has this kinda rough ‘n gritty look that I couldn’t be happier with.

The one thing that surprised me was how many throws it took to cover the canvas. ugh. I definitely am glad I experimented with this idea because I will definitely be using it again in the future. You’ll see, I’m a cookin a somethin up (with Italian accent).

Woo! I was sad to see the piece go, but I was excited to see it go up in flames!

You really thing so? It’s hard to agree with that fully, but it does seems like the right way to go.
