Secrets - An Update - Phew… about time.

Hello Everyone! Sorry for the massive delay on this project. Wow…. almost a month, hard to believe. Many things happened that put it off. The art reason is because I felt the response was so grand that I had to bring something slightly different and special to the end product. I didn’t want to go my traditional route. I ended up making four different projects and trashing all of them before finally setting on the current one. As you can imagine trashing four projects is crushing for many reasons, money spent, time spent, ideas destroyed, etc. But in the end I came up with the right approach.

Secrets can be many things to us. They can be an almost pointless secret, the deepest darkest things from our past, the embarrassing moments we wouldn’t tell a soul, but the one thing that probably holds them all together is how we treat them. We put such power and thought into the idea of the secret that we tend to give it a life of it’s own. I know for me, if I try to keep something secret eventually I lose track of what the secret is and think I’m keeping everything secret and then I have trouble talking about anything. ugh.

I’m not going to talk about the trashed projects because I liked the ideas and I will approach them in the future sometime. But the head of secrets went through so many stages to get the final project. As you can tell it is essentially cut from one piece of paper. I had to first design the cut out which was probably the hardest part of this project. I had to make a small version of it, adjust aspects then make another and I repeated this process many times. (I have little paper heads all over the studio). After many trial heads I came up with the right design and was planning it large scale. I was also planning on putting some shading into the head but in the end decided that would go against the idea of the project.

Bringing the final head together was relatively simple because of all the trial and error I did small scale but taping the two halves together was a total pain. I was hoping that I might be able to prop up the head for pictures but quickly decided it was much better to walk around in it. It was also totally disorientating to be in.

I just landed a really cool gig that I can’t talk about yet.

(Update: 7-21  I’m done with Goodbye Art)

    FINALLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i’ve been waiting soo long! great job on the project, it turned out fantastic. one question though, you said that you would make the secrets ‘disappear’, and now you are just passing them on to someone else…. i don’t understand..

Amazing project as always. I was bumped when I missed the video and the deadline for submiting secrets because I had no internet for a week :( I hope I can be a part of a project of yours in the near future!

Interesting how one of the secrets you read was almost the same as my own, but with the genders reversed.

I’m buying it once my damn PayPal starts cooperating. Grrr.
Haha, & that was quite a stumble you took at the end, there!

I just saw the video of the project and loved it!

I was both shocked and liberated to hear one of the secrets I submitted read aloud. Out of the thousands you recieved, I never thought mine would have been chosen, but it was a very gratifying feeling to get it out, in a matter of speaking. It feels like I have totally let it off my shoulders, but still nobody knows.

    Thank you, Phil!

  11. Myona Says:

    You genius.

I need one of those miniature paper heads around your studio.

    O_o;

  12. Nicole Says:

That was wonderful! Nice to hear from you again.

The head being disorientating was ironic considering that its a head made of thousands of secrets. Ipso facto, let too many secrets weigh on you and you are lost.

Well good luck on your future projects.

  13. Kelly Says:

    Hey Phil!
Glad you stuck with the project and worked it out. It’s kind of reassuring to know that even artists like you get stuck sometimes too :)
Keep up the great work, and thanks for keeping my secret

I spent like and hour trying to think of a secret but I never did, I wonder if I even have any. Nice work, it took me two watches to understand exactly what you did.

  16. Liz Says:

I agree with Myona. Sell me one or two of those mini heads. Please Phil, sir. Do, sir.

Interesting that you had a struggle there.

  17. Kit Dyrby Says:
